Stephen Chase: Documentation
Between December 2012 and May 2013 Stephen Chase undertook a series of five walks and performances under the title EXPEDITION. This is a record of material by Stephen and those who took part.
Each walk was derived from a renowned expeditionary journey (Ibn Fadian’s depiction of Viking burial, Admiral Zheng He’s Ming Dynasty voyages, Stanley & Livingstone, Alexander von Humboldt’s scientific enquiries in South America, nurse Kate Marsden’s epic dash across Siberia): the shape of the route was imposed (not to scale) upon a map of Sheffield – this served as the basis for the course taken on the walk. On the walk sounds, images, thoughts, etc, were recorded. The documentation collected fed into a piece developed over the course of a week which was then performed at Bank Street.
We are currently showing material from the first five stages of EXPEDITION and plans for the next stage..
