Matthew Sweeney – Reflection

“Doing art helps me to cope with whatever happens in my life”.

Matthew Sweeney creates his work to help him make sense of his personal identity and his place in the world. He uses art as a therapeutic tool to positively express his thoughts helping him to cope with mental illness. His work is open ended with each new piece forming part of the thought process in his personal exploration.

His work is heavily influenced by his day-to-day experiences as he meets and interacts with people from all walks of life from artists and poets to buskers and people who are homeless. Religion also plays a central role in Matthew’s work he often contemplates the existence of a higher power that he feels affects his personal identity. He chooses to express this by appropriating religious iconography to form a central theme to his paintings.
