In a Dark Wood, presented by Archive Sheffield and part of this year’s Festival of the Mind, draws on archive photography to chart changing attitudes towards mental distress. The anonymised pictures, from the records of the Middlewood Hospital, were archived in the early 20th Century. These pictures are presented alongside audio recordings by people living with mental health problems today.
Archive Sheffield is a group of photographers specialising in documentary work. While building their own archive of contemporary photographs taken in and around Sheffield, they like to make sure other archives are seen, not just filed away.
All galleries are accessible by ramp, however the doorways are 28 inches wide. The toilets and cafe are not currently wheelchair accessible.
