Resident artist Ian Baxter and previous resident Stephen Chase have been invited to occupy the four satellite gallery spaces at Bank Street Arts for a month and invite an artist of their choosing to assist them with the creation of a new sound based exhibition. Each artist will occupy a separate room and the ‘work’ as a whole will only be audible in its entirety from a central position in the main gallery space.
The work will develop throughout the duration of the exhibition, be punctuated with events and happenings as the soundscape develops and evolves.
The starting point in each room is different – as the whole piece evolves the artists may begin to respond more to the work of one another or they may continue to plough their own furrow:
Ian Baxter – “My piece will consist of a sound sculpture using loudspeakers arranged in organic forms resembling plants. To reflect the durational nature of the exhibition the form of the sculpture will change over time – in other words the plants will grow. The sonic element will consist of material triggered by weather information, with the sounds changing in response to changes in heat, rain and light, just as normal plants might.”
Stephen Chase – “During the course of the exhibition I will make a work consisting of a series of pieces in response to the gallery room and to David, Ian and Ross’s work. I want to explore the listening experience by means of making slight interventions and suggestions for ways in which gallery visitors can interact with the exhibition and the spaces at Bank Street Arts. I will begin with a CD loop based around fairly low level white/pink/brown noise. Over the course of the exhibition I will produce a series of score instructions for gallery visitors to make use of in listening both to the sounds in my room and the exhibition as a whole.”
Ross Parfitt – “The intention is to place the instruments of a drumkit in the centre of one of the rooms along with a stepladder from which I will drop a cluster of objects onto the instruments every few days, different types of object each time. The objects will be left where they fall, on the instruments or floor until the very end of the month so that visitors can see what has already happened. A video of each drop slowed down will be played on a monitor in the space – a timetable will be provided detailing the drops.”
David Devaney – “Static images of buildings across the city are chosen and rendered into sound using image synthesis software, reproducing the image in spectral form. Over the course of the exhibition, sounds collected within the gallery space will be used to alter and contort the pure sinusoidal structure of the building, allowing background sound from exhibiting artists work to imprint themselves onto the image/sound until the image deteriorates. Each manipulation will be documented on a daily basis, recording the gradual demolishing of the buildings”
Feedback is welcome and may well be used in the exhibition….
